Gianluigi Donnarumma was largely a spectator for PSG in the 1-0 Champions League win over Real Madrid, but reassured Leo Messi after a missed penalty, while he theorises Kylian Mbappe’ is ‘an alien.’

The goalkeeper got the nod rather than Keylor Navas this evening, but it was fairly irrelevant, because the Italy international didn’t have to make a single save.

Real Madrid failed to get a shot on target, with only three attempts throughout the 94 minutes.

Instead, Thibaut Courtois made decisive blocks, including a save on Messi’s spot-kick, before he was beaten deep into stoppages by Kylian Mbappé.

“It was so satisfying, we should’ve scored earlier, but Kylian took care of it,” Donnarumma told Mediaset and Sky Sport Italia after the match.

“We are very happy, it’s going to be another big game in Madrid. We feel strong and know that giving 100%, we can beat anyone. I am proud to be part of this squad and this club.”

Messi has now failed to convert five of his 23 penalties in the Champions League.

“I have nothing to say about Leo, these things happen to everyone. We all know who Leo Messi is. We have many champions here who can change the game, Kylian scored, but we all played an incredible game.

“Kylian is an alien, he’s an extra-terrestrial! You see it in training, in games between ranks, he’s just incredible. I don’t know what he’ll do next season, that is up to him, but we will enjoy him every day he’s here.”

The memes on social media depicted Donnarumma having a cup of coffee, reading a book or having a nap, as he was largely a spectator when keeping this clean sheet in his first Champions League knockout fixture.

The former Milan man was asked how he felt dealing with this constant competition from Navas.

“We are always ready and until the last second are concentrated so we can give our best.”
