Gigio Donnarumma, who had made his senior debut at Milan under Sinisa Mihajlovic, pays tribute to his former coach who died today: ‘Thanks for believing in me.’
Mihajlovic’s family has confirmed the death of the Serie A legend today, Friday, December 16, 2022.
Donnarumma was barely 16 in October 2015 when Mihajlovic, who was in charge of the Rossoneri at that time, decided to start him in a home Serie A clash against Sassuolo.
The Italy international went on to play 251 games with the Rossoneri before a free transfer to PSG in the summer of 2021.
“You’ve always been a fighter and I know how much you fought,” the PSG star wrote on Instagram, adding a picture of Mihajlovic hugging him.
“I will forever thank you for believing in me and for everything you told me since the first day we met. You will forever be in my heart. Goodbye, mister.”
Mihajlovic had been diagnosed with leukaemia in 2019. He had recovered after a cycle of treatment, but this past March, he announced that the illness was back, so he had to undergo a new cycle of chemotherapy.
In his last Instagram post, shared exactly a month ago, he said that he was ‘lucky’ and that a new phase of his life was about to begin.
