Donnarumma named best goalkeeper by IFFHS

International Federation of Football History and Statistics has named Paris Saint-Germain and Italy player Gianluigi Donnarumma the best goalkeeper in 2021.

The former Rossoneri shot stopper, who helped the club back to the Champions League by finishing second in Serie A 2020-21, joined PSG over the summer.

His contract expired and the Italy international decided to join the French giants, where he has struggled for playing time in the battle with Keylor Navas.

But the 22-year-old is the first choice between the sticks for the Azzurri and was an important member of the team that went all the way at the European Championship 2020.

International Federation of Football History and Statistics named the young goalkeeper the ‘world’s best goalkeeper in 2021’ in the IFFHS Awards.

“Italian Gianluigi Donnarumma is crowned as the world’s best goalkeeper in 2021 with 170 points, 95 more than Manuel Neuer, the German recordholder of the IFFHS Trophies,” a statement read.

“Donnarumma was one of the Italian heroes winning EURO 2020 and prevented Neuer from becoming the only recordman of the most IFFHS Trophies.

“The third place in the ranking for 2021 goes to Edouard Mendy, who won the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea, becoming one of the big surprises of the year!”
