Gianluigi Donnarumma assures he’d play for Italy ‘even if I was missing a finger’ after pushing through pain to start the 2-1 Nations League victory over Hungary.

Despite many changes to the side that held Germany to a 1-1 draw, this was a more fluid performance with two first half goals from Nicolò Barella and Lorenzo Pellegrini.

Hungary got one back when Gianluca Mancini accidentally turned the Attila Fiola cross into his own net, but Matteo Politano’s effort was denied only by the crossbar.

“It is indescribable, to be wearing the Number 1 shirt and the captain’s armband, it’s the ultimate,” Donnarumma told RAI Sport.

The Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper was a major doubt to feature after dislocating his finger in the 1-1 draw with Germany.

He was able to play with two fingers strapped together and a special glove that was opened up to allow for that.

“For this jersey, I’d play even if I was missing a finger. I have to thank the medical staff, it seemed impossible a couple of days ago to play, but with my desire to be here and their help, we did it. I want to wear this jersey for as long as I possibly can.”

Italy had seemed so empty after failing to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, losing the play-off to North Macedonia, and were heavily beaten 3-0 by Argentina in the Finalissima.

However, with so many new faces and a generational shift, they have rediscovered their mojo. What changed?

“We do feel the desire to be together again, to work hard, all the new lads are really giving us a big hand and we will go forward with this sense of unity.

“We knew that we had to do something new, to change, to reboot and the lads all put themselves at the disposal of the coach. They are eager to work and that’s the right attitude, because this shirt is priceless.”

  1. @gee.

Another clown. Clearly don’t watch games enough to end up making such silly statements. Gigio gave everything to Milan right until the last moment. And he has also given Italy a trophy. But you full of hate plastic losers don’t care for Italy. Instead come here to write drivel, whilst pretending to care for Milan.
