Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma revealed he ‘didn’t realise’ the Azzurri had won after saving Bukayo Saka’s effort. ‘I only realised when I saw my teammates celebrate’.
The Azzurri goalkeeper was awarded the Player of the Tournament by UEFA after being decisive in two penalty shootouts against Spain and England.
“We are happy, we are enjoying every second,” Donnarumma told Sky Sport Italia. “It’s been 50 days but they flew, because we had a great time together.”
Donnarumma decided not to renew with Milan and moves on after more than 250 games with the Rossoneri. Now, the 22-year-old is set for a new chapter at Paris Saint-Germain.
“Let’s see these days. I’ll talk about everything,” the young goalkeeper continued. “I can say that I will always be tied to the Rossoneri colours.
“Now, I’ll enjoy the party and then tomorrow I will be on holiday. I thank all those who have given me affection and I hope to have repaid it.”
PSG will soon announce his signing after those of Achraf Hakimi and Sergio Ramos who have already begun the pre-season with the Ligue 1 giants.
Milan replaced Donnarumma with Mike Maignan who has joined the Rossoneri in a €13m deal from Lille.
Donnarumma was decisive in two penalty shootouts to help the Azzurri win EURO 2020, but he admitted it still has to sink in.
“I still have to realise everything. Tomorrow, I will go home and enjoy the whole family. My piece of mind has been part of what I have lived over the years.

“I have treasured what I have lived and it has become experience. Peace of mind has always been my strength, but experience helps a lot. Both when things go well and when things go wrong.”
Donnarumma didn’t celebrate immediately after saving Bukayo Saka’s decisive penalty and admitted he ‘didn’t realise’ the Azzurri had won the match.
“I didn’t celebrate because I didn’t realise we had won,” Donnarumma. “I looked at the referee, I tried to understand if VAR had given the OK and I only realised we had won when I saw my teammates celebrating.”
