Technical director Paolo Maldini could help Milan renew with Gianluigi Donnarumma as his final gesture before the former captain leaves Milanello.

Calciomercato.com claims Donnarumma will extend his current deal expiring in June 2021 in the next few weeks and could therefore be Maldini’s final touch before stepping down from his director role at the Rossoneri.

The report claims Donnarumma leaving on a free transfer next summer could end up being catastrophic financially for Milan and Maldini has decided to prevent such an outcome and won’t leave the big task for his successor.

The goalkeeper is one of the last remaining jewels at Milan and has a host of admirers both in Italy and abroad. In theory, he has everything to gain by not renewing his deal, giving him an opportunity to discuss with other clubs from January and even signing a more lucrative deal elsewhere.

But Milan would suffer big time if Donnarumma left on a free transfer next year and the talks with Maldini should be able to prevent that from happening.

The outlet claims the two protagonists’ love for the club will stop them from putting Milan in such difficulty and renew his deal to help the Diavolo get the most out of a future sale.

He might not be willing to cut his salary and will not guarantee staying at San Siro, but the deal will instead protect his value for the club and help Milan financially in the future.
