Iker Casillas sees Gianluigi Donnarumma as the heir to Gigi Buffon, but hopes the Juventus veteran keeps playing.

Buffon plans to retire after the World Cup in the summer, and Casillas spoke about his old friend as he accepted the Golden Foot award in Monte Carlo.

“Well I’d love him to keep playing football, because besides being a friend I think he’s an example for every goalkeeper in the world,” the Spain legend said.

“I think he has great value when you look at what he’s managed to achieve, especially last year where he was nominated for a lot of different awards.

“So I hope he’ll reconsider and keep playing football, because he’s still good.

“As for Donnarumma, the truth is that he’s a young goalkeeper with a lot of potential, who is already a reality, a present day thing.

“I think Italy should be calm, because after Buffon they’ve got a replacement like Donnarumma who I think will become a great goalkeeper for Italy.”
