As expected, Gianluigi Donnarumma is on the Paris Saint-Germain bench against Club Brugge, so must wait for his Champions League debut.

The former Milan goalkeeper has never played in European club football’s top tournament and his move to PSG was motivated in part by the ambition to compete at that level.

However, he did not count on how difficult it would be to dislodge Keylor Navas from the starting XI.

So far this season, Donnarumma has made only one appearance in the Paris Saint-Germain jersey, their Ligue 1 home game against Clermont Foot, which resulted in a 4-0 victory.

He had been hoping to get his big break in the Champions League opener with Club Brugge this evening, but instead Navas again gets the gloves.

It is frustrating for the 22-year-old Italy international, who was named Player of the Tournament at UEFA EURO 2020.

Donnarumma has 215 Serie A games under his belt, but only ever had two Europa League campaigns with Milan in 2017-18 and 2020-21.

10 thought on “Donnarumma benched by PSG in Champions League”
  1. As expected, he’ll be a fringe player for PSG I don’t think he deserve to start for the azzurri anymore

  2. @Marco, he should have stayed at Milan, a club in ascendency, not gone to a club that will fail to qualify for the CL this season.

  3. @Vero Rossonero Let’s chat Sunday! Gotta love Inter and Milano fans talk trash after Juve dominated them for a decade. All good, love to see Italian teams do well in Europe, unfortunately today they both lost….

  4. Oh the irony. He could have extended the contract with Milan for another 2 years, play his first UCL competition with his ‘childhood’ club and ascend to the next level and at that moment if he wanted to separate ways with Milan he could do it with heads up. But instead… (well, we all know the story)
