Done deal: Grosso agrees to become new coach of Olympique Lyonnais

Multiple outlets are reporting that Fabio Grosso has officially signed all of the necessary paperwork to take over as the new coach of Ligue 1 side Olympique Lyonnais.

Since Wednesday, it has been reported that Grosso had been chosen by Lyon to become the new coach, and now, an official announcement is all that is missing before the former World Cup winner takes charge.

Another Italian had previously been tipped to take over the French heavyweights, Gennaro Gattuso, but problems that cropped up during negotiations led the club to look at alternative options.

It is expected that Grosso will be in the stands for Lyon’s upcoming match against Le Havre on Sunday evening, but is unlikely that he will be in the dugout until the following game against Brest next weekend.

According to previous reports from Fabrizio Romano, Grosso will bring his own backroom staff with him and that they are likely to be unveiled in front of the media on Monday.

Grosso has history with Lyon, having spent two years of his playing career there between 2007 and 2009. One year prior to his arrival, he had famously scored the winning penalty in the World Cup final against France.

Since retiring in 2012, Grosso has gone on to coach Juventus’ Primavera side as well as senior clubs Bari, Hellas Verona, Brescia, FC Sion and most recently Frosinone, with whom he won the Serie B title at the end of last season.
