Former Bundesliga defender Giulio Donati has officially started training with Lecce, preparing for a return to the club.

The 29-year-old has been a free agent since his contract at Mainz expired at the end of last season, and Lecce confirmed he took part in a training session the day after a 2-2 draw against high-flying Cagliari.

The fullback came through the youth academy at Inter, moved to the Bundesliga in 2013, when Bayer Leverkusen snapped him up from Serie B side Grosseto.

He has previously featured 14 times for Lecce in Serie B during the 2010-11 season and will be training with Fabio Liverani’s first team squad, who are preparing to offer him a contract.
