Youri Djorkaeff says Marcus Thuram and his father Lilian have the same mentality and is convinced the Inter striker can become one of the best players in Serie A.

The Nerazzurri legend spoke to La Gazzetta dello Sport ahead of Inter’s 2023-24 Champions League debut against Real Sociedad on Thursday.

“It’s impossible to predict who will win [the Champions League] now,” said the ex-France international.

“The Champions League campaign is long and unpredictable. Surely Inter are among the top sides for quality and history.”

The Nerazzurri lost the Champions League Final last season and Djorkaeff would not be surprised if Simone Inzaghi’s men go all the way to the Wembley Final this term.

“It was a shame because Inter had enormous chances against Manchester City, nobody expected such a Final, and everyone saw Man City as the big favourite. However, it is now clear that Inter can face anyone on a par,” he said.

Djorkaeff won the 1998 World Cup with France alongside ex-Parma and Juventus defender Lilian Thuram. His son has signed for Inter and scored his second goal for the Nerazzurri in a 5-1 derby win last week.

“I often spoke to Lilian, also about Marcus’ career,” said the ex-Inter midfielder.

“He’s a breath of fresh air for the Nerazzurri. Dzeko did well in that position for two years, while Lukaku had highs and lows. I immediately texted him when he signed for Inter and I’ve been following him since.

“I think Inter is an ideal club for him. He has joined a unique team and I believe he will become one of the best players in the league if he adapts. I have no doubts he’ll do it.

“Like his father Lilian he is solid mentally, which is a key factor in becoming a top player.”

France international Benjamin Pavard will make his Inter debut tonight and Djorkaeff predicted a big impact for his compatriot.

“He brings even more international experience and offers more options to Inzaghi. Benji can play in different positions and is a very complete defender.”
