Empoli have reportedly released coach Alessio Dionisi, so he is free to take over at Sassuolo.

Dionisi had taken Empoli to promotion by winning the Serie B title this season and was already targeted by Sampdoria too.

He had been undecided, but when Sassuolo approached him with the opportunity to replace Shakhtar Donetsk-bound Roberto De Zerbi, it peaked his interest.

According to Sportitalia and Sky Sport Italia, Empoli have now agreed to release Dionisi so he can take the Sassuolo job.

In turn, the Tuscans will be coached by Aurelio Andreazzoli, who had already enjoyed two spells on the Empoli bench in 2017-18 and 2018-19.

Andreazzoli had started the 2019-20 season at Genoa, but was fired just nine games in.

It’s a blow for two other parties, because Marco Giampaolo had been in advanced talks with Sassuolo, while Sampdoria had targeted Dionisi.
