Alessio Dionisi maintains Sassuolo ‘deserved extra time’ in Turin, but concedes Juventus pinned them back in the second half to force a late Coppa Italia quarter-final winner.

The Neroverdi arguably had the better of the first half, as after the early Paulo Dybala volley, Junior Hamed Traore curled a wonderful equaliser into the far top corner.

However, Gianluca Pegolo performed heroics in the second half and was also rescued by the woodwork until a Dusan Vlahovic strike took a big deflection off Ruan Tressoldi.

“It’s a pity, but I am happy with the performance, especially after recent outings. We deserved more in the first half, in the second the stadium on their side and their quality pushed us back into our own half,” Dionisi told Sport Mediaset.

“I thought 1-1 was the fair result and it would’ve been good to fight it out in extra time, but we made some mistakes on their goal.

“We had come here to play our game. We had to make some changes, as Berardi and Traore have to play the next game at the weekend, but we would’ve been happy to play extra time and I feel we’d have deserved it too.

“Juve deserve credit for pushing so hard to the end and they made the most of a ricochet.”

Sassuolo have stuttered in Serie A lately and face Roma this weekend in Serie A without suspended Giacomo Raspadori and Gianluca Scamacca.

“I hope this can be a turning point for us, but the fact remains we lost and therefore cannot be happy. We can be satisfied with the performance, especially the first half, and hope to build on that going forward.

“We must realise that we do well when we play as a team, not when we rely too much on individual moves.”
