Sassuolo coach Alessio Dionisi feels the referee ‘made a mistake’ on the Samir Handanovic red card incident and it changed the game in Inter’s favour.

The Neroverdi dominated the first half and had taken the lead through Domenico Berardi, but were furious on the stroke of half-time when the referee and VAR did not take action on a possible Handanovic red card.

Instead, substitute Edin Dzeko changed the game, scoring the equaliser within 30 seconds, then earning the penalty converted by Lautaro Martinez for a 2-1 final result.

“Inevitably, the lads were upset during the break for the incident that everyone saw,” Dionisi told Sky Sport Italia.

“Seeing the footage again, it just confirms the impression I had from the touchline, which is that it was a red card.

“What I can say about that is that the referee made a mistake. Coaches make mistakes, players make mistakes, so do referees.

“If we had played 11 against 10 in the second half, we would’ve won. I wonder why VAR even exists sometimes, I am angrier than I seem right now, and we have to accept errors, but only to a degree. We hope this luck comes around our way as well in future.

“It’s a pity to be talking about a defeat after such a good performance. We deserved a better result, although we were a bit naïve on the two goals that we conceded. Failing to double our lead also helped to fuel Inter’s confidence.”

  1. it seems whenever inter involved the VAR seems to conveniently know when and when not to run checks. for example last game when it looked like atalanta got a winner and VAR decided to go way back in the goal to let inter off the hook. it was clear that handanovic impeded the player. should have been a straight red. but for some reason VAR decides to go sleep. it is just funny to watch

  2. Sassuolo need to get rid of that scrub goalkeeper Consigli.

I never forget how he gave up 3 bad goals when an Italy team lost to Belgium 3-2. That Olympic team
was loaded and he just ruined them

    Now he is with Sassuolo
Playing for so many years and conceding so many goals and I just don’t get it.

The first Inter goal he should have come out and taken the ball and yet he stood there sleeping waiting for a lifetime to the ball to travel way across the field

The second goal which came from a penalty was complete amateur hour

Sassuolo will always be the team that’s stuck mid to upper mid table simply because their goalie gives up way too many goals
