Inter defender Federico Dimarco admits he has accomplished his dream by playing for the Nerazzurri and explains how he replaced ‘unplayable’ Ivan Perisic.

The Italy left-back has become a regular starter at the Stadio Meazza after Perisic’s free transfer to Tottenham in the summer.

Dimarco is a product of Inter academy and a die-hard supporter of the Nerazzurri. However, he spent several years on loan before returning to his favourite club permanently.

What would he tell his younger self now?

“You’ve accomplished your dream called Inter,” Dimarco told Gazzetta.

“Ivan [Perisic] was extraordinary last season he was unplayable. I met him when he arrived and when we reunited after a few years, he had reached a higher level.”

The 25-year-old scored a brace against Bologna on Wednesday and has now three goals in Serie A this term.

“It was thrilling, but the victory is what matters the most beyond my brace,” he said.

The Nerazzurri are 11 points below leaders Napoli and have lost five games from 14 this term.

“Criticism is normal, five defeats in Serie A are too many, and anything can happen in football,” the defender admitted.

“It won’t be easy, but we’ll give our best to get as far as possible.

“We deserved to lose against Milan, not against Juventus. We had the game in our hands, they didn’t dominate. However, we take responsibility, it’s our fault if we lost.”

The Nerazzurri will meet Porto in the Champions League Round of 16.

“There are no easy games, perhaps they were the best team for us in the draw, but we’ll have to face them as they are Chelsea or City.”

Who was the most influential coach in his career?

“Juric has completed me in the body ain my mind, keeping me focused during games.”

Romelu Lukaku has been struggling with injuries, playing just five games this season, while Milan Skriniar is in talks to extend his contract.

“Lukaku wanted to return so much, and he has a lot to give us and the fans, but Dzeko, Lautaro and Correa are also doing well,” said Dimarco.

“Skriniar? We talk about everything except this [contract extension]. It’s his choice and he must remain calm because he is very strong. He has proved o the pitch how decisive he is.”

Will he watch the World Cup even if Italy have not qualified?

“I’ll watch it anyway because I love football. Perhaps, Messi’s Argentina are favourite, it would be icing on the cake for him because it’s his last chance.”
