‘Difficult to repeat Maradona success’

Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain is aware that it will be difficult to repeat Diego Maradona’s success.

The Argentine legend won the World Cup with the national team in 1986, and then went on to win Serie A with the Partenopei in 1987.

But the current goalscorer at Stadio San Paolo has conceded that repeating that feat will be a tough ask.

“It would be nice, of course, but it’s going to be very difficult,” he told Il Mattino.

“Serie A is a very difficult League that lasts all year, and the World Cup is seven very difficult games. But if it were to happen, it would be amazing.

“I’m pleased with my first season in Italy – to win the Coppa Italia was fantastic, but the elimination from the Champions League still hurts.”

The former Real Madrid man then commented on the difference between the game in Italy and Spain, as well as Coach Rafa Benitez.

“Here it is very different, because most teams in the League play with five defenders. It’s rare that a team has a back four.

“I need to get used to that and try to grow as a player. But I came to Napoli for a new experience.

“Benitez? I followed him when he was at Valencia and Liverpool. He has always played an offensive game, which I really liked.

“When he came to Napoli I was convinced straight away.”
