The Brazilian joined the Bianconeri from Werder Bremen for €24.5m in the summer of 2009, but after an encouraging start to his career in Turin he tapered off and spent just a single season in Italy.

“At the time I’d received a dream offer from Bayern, even better than Juventus,” Diego explained to Sport BILD.

“We were at the top with Werder at the time though, we should have been champions in 2007 and we finished runners-up in 2008.

“We were up there with the Bavarians but we just lacked that last step to win the title – that was the only difference.

“We played in the Champions League, we won the DFP Pokal, reached the UEFA Cup final. We played exciting football and we beat Bayern.

“So it was clear I’d achieved everything I could in Germany.

“Real Madrid also wanted me, we had talks. Juventus contacted me three times at the end of the Bundesliga season, and everyone from Ronaldo to the Brazilians who had played there were excited about Juve and Italian football.

“We had great players, but we weren’t a team. We finished second or third, but it was a difficult season for us.

“I wanted the change, a new country. If I had to decide today, I would do the same again.”
