Former Milan goalkeeper Dida explains why the derby della Madonnina is ‘different’ and how Mike Maignan adapted to Italian football last season.

The ex-Brazil international was Milan’s goalkeeping coach in 2021-22, the first one of Maignan at San Siro.

The France international had joined the Rossoneri replacing Gigio Donnarumma and had an immediate impact at the club.

“We focused on his integration into Italian football, he had to understand how it worked. He struggled a bit at the beginning, but he learned so much in a short period of time,” Dida told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“We were surprised and happy to see his rapid developments day by day. It was great for me to give my contribution, knowing that I worked in the right way.

“Now, he has to continue his development path with the professionals following him today. He is exceptional as a player and as a person.”

The Rossoneri face Inter in the derby della Madonnina today, what are Dida’s memories and why the meeting between the Rossoneri and the Nerazzurri is so special?

“The derby is too important, not only for the city but the entire country,” he said.

“They usually say that all the games are the same, it isn’t true. The derby is different, for the atmosphere in town and in the dressing room the days before the game.

“For what it represents for Milan and for us wearing the Rossoneri shirt. I am not talking about tension or anxiety, but adrenaline and a positive charge.”

Back in the days, Dida won many derbies along with his compatriot Kaka. New signing Charles De Ketelaere has now been compared to the 2007 Ballon d’Or winner, but the ex-goalkeeper doesn’t want to put too much pressure on the Belgian.

“He made such a good impression but, like all the foreigners coming to Serie A, he needs time to express himself at his best. Charles has all the features to become a champion.”

CDK is expected to start in Milan’s attack today. The Rossoneri have earned ten points in the opening four Serie A games of the season, one fewer than their city rivals.
