Diaz: ‘Ibrahimovic is like a father to us’

Brahim Diaz underlined the importance of Zlatan Ibrahimovic to the Milan squad, suggesting that ‘he makes all the players better’.

The 40-year-old Swedish veteran was a crucial part of the Rossoneri squad that broke their decade-long Scudetto drought this season, scoring eight goals in 23 Serie A appearances. Off the pitch, he was a key figure in the dressing room, being an experienced and mature winner.

Speaking to Marca at an event in Malaga, Diaz discussed the importance of Ibrahimovic to the squad and how much of a difference he makes in the dressing room.

“He is my father’s age, but he still makes a difference. For me he is like a father in the dressing room, he has made my life easier because when I have the ball I am obliged to pass it to him so he doesn’t get angry!

“He is an unbelievable player, with great charisma and who loves to win, he likes to work in training and he also transmits that to others. He makes all the players better because he pushes you to always give your best.”

The 22-year-old Diaz struggled to make a strong impression in Lombardy this season, failing to particularly shine in a strong Milan side. The Spaniard made 31 Serie A appearances, for a total of 1871 minutes. In that time, he scored three goals and provided three assists.

Diaz is tied to Milan until 2023 after signing a two-year loan deal and the Rossoneri can make his stay permanent for around €22m, although Real Madrid hold a €27m buy-back clause.
