The Azzurri will resume their campaign with two games against Armenia and Denmark this month.

And Diamanti is hoping that he and new teammate Alberto Gilardino will be included in the squad which will be named on Sunday.

“I think it would be possible for Gilardino and I to be in the national team together,” the former West Ham man noted.

“There could be a Juventus” data-scaytid=”8″>Juventus block behind us and a Bologna attack – that would be a nice slap in the face for the Bianconeri,” he smiled.

Gilardino has been rejuvenated at the Stadio Dall’Ara as his five goals in five Serie A games underline following his summer switch from Genoa.

“Someone who has scored 150 goals at the age of 30 has to be a champion,” Diamanti continued. “He’s a humble guy too, one who works hard in training.

“I spoke to him in the summer when there were rumours that Bologna could get him. Thank goodness that we did!”
