“I don’t remember what I thought at the final penalty,” he told Sky Sport Italia after beating Bayern Munich on spot-kicks.
“I got very emotional and burst into tears. These have been three intense months that concluded with a great result.
“I had to give interviews, so missed some of the celebrations in the locker room, but as soon as I was done with those I dived in to join the party.
“We are happy with the victory and bringing the trophy to Stamford Bridge, while we are also happy to be back in the Champions League.”
The Blues had failed to qualify via the Premier League, but by winning the tournament have taken the fourth English spot, pushing Tottenham back down to the Europa League.
“Credit should also be given to Villas Boas, as he started this victorious campaign and allowed me to join Chelsea,” continued Di Matteo, whose job is by no means confirmed for next season.
“Bayern played very well and created more scoring opportunities. When it comes to penalties you need luck and we were certainly lucky…
“Future? My future is going on vacation, because I need a rest and to stay with my family.”
