Eusebio Di Francesco maintains Hellas Verona ‘didn’t deserve to lose’ 3-2 to Sassuolo and disagreed with the Miguel Veloso red card.

The hosts were down to 10 men before half-time, as Veloso received two bookings, but still pushed it all the way with a Mattia Zaccagni brace.

Verona 2-3 Sassuolo: 10-man Hellas defeated

“I want to congratulate my lads for the spirit, mentality and the opening 30 minutes, where we created lots of chances that we didn’t make the most of,” the coach told DAZN.

“We knew that Sassuolo had a lot of quality and could hurt us, but we were a little unlucky on the first goal with that deflection. We certainly deserved more from this game.

“I also doubt the decision to send Miguel Veloso off, as before his foul, there was a Filip Djuricic tackle that should’ve been penalised first. It irritated me to lose after we fought so hard, this team did not deserve to lose today.

“Incidents like this can transform a game and I cannot ask for more from my players. We need to maintain this mentality and character, which Verona have had over the last few years.”

  1. He’s right. They didn’t. But created enough chances to score 3. Didn’t take them. The effort for 96 minutes was really encouraging. Never gave up.
