Cesena Coach Domenico Di Carlo says referees ‘must have courage’ after his side were denied a penalty against Napoli.

The Cavallucci Marini saw strong claims for a penalty turned down during their 3-2 defeat, when Manolo Gabbiadini appeared to foul Franco Brienza.

“That’s the eighth penalty in 10 or 11 games which we haven’t been given,” Di Carlo lamented in an interview with Sky after the match.

“That’s the eighth penalty in 10 or 11 games which we haven’t been given,” Di Carlo lamented in an interview with Sky after the match.

“Those points are lost now. Tonight that had to be given, they [referees] must have the courage to give these penalties.

“I don’t like excuses or alibis, but for us one, or three, or zero points makes a big difference. It doesn’t matter now. We’re relegated.

“We didn’t win games at the right times, though not because we’re unworthy, as these lads gave everything.

“Some incidents in key moments penalised us, like the penalty against Palermo.”

Gregoire Defrel scored twice against the Partenopei, and Di Carlo believes he’s ready to make the leap to a bigger club.

“He’s ready for any team, whether it’s in mid-table or at the top of the standings.”
