Former Serie A striker and Premier League cult hero Paolo Di Canio has recently explained why he was unable to take a taxi ride on one particular occasion while he was playing for West Ham in the early 2000s.

Di Canio, who is best remembered in England for his time with the Irons, was turned away by a taxi driver in Knightsbridge due to their conflicting loyalties.

As it turned out, the taxi driver in question was a Millwall supporter and therefore felt he was unable to chauffeur the star striker from his archrival’s team.

“I was in Knightsbridge and needed a taxi, so I called one down. The driver rolled down the window and asked me: ‘where do you need to go?’

“I told him where I needed to go, but he looked at me and asked me: ‘are you Di Canio?’

“I told him that I was and he told me: ‘I can’t take you, I’m a Millwall fan.’ I looked at him and told him simply: ‘meh, I wouldn’t have enjoyed it anyway.’”
