Former striker Paolo Di Canio believes Romelu Lukaku would not be a starter at Inter this season, despite the recent struggles of Lautaro Martinez and Edin Dzeko.

The Argentinean striker has yet to find the net in 2022, while Dzeko has only scored two goals in the last nine Serie A games. Lukaku is also under fire at Chelsea after scoring just ten goals in 29 appearances. He was left on the bench in the last two matches against Lille in the Champions League and Liverpool in the Carabao Cup Final.

The 28-year-old is reportedly willing to return to Inter at the end of the season, although the Serie A champions are not planning to welcome him back.

“He’d be very expensive considering that he’d be a reserve in this Inter side,” Di Canio told Sky Sport Italia.

“Inter have a different playing style, with more quality and a striker [Edin Dzeko] almost playing as an attacking midfielder. Lukaku doesn’t have this quality.”

The Nerazzurri face Milan in the first leg of the Coppa Italia semi-finals tonight and the ex-Lazio striker believes that the derby della Madonnina in February was a turning point for both teams. Milan won 2-1 thanks to a brace of Olivier Giroud in just three minutes.

“Those minutes have turned the season around,” said Di Canio.

“Had they won against Milan, Inter would have been the table leaders with a seven-point lead and a game in hand. The season was potentially over. Now everything has changed.”
