Paolo Di Canio maintains it would be a sporting ‘miracle’ if Luciano Spalletti got Tanguy Ndombele working at Napoli after his loan from Tottenham Hotspur. ‘Not walking on water, but if he at least gets him swimming…’

Former West Ham United and Lazio player Di Canio now works as a pundit on Sky Sport Italia, specialising in Premier League coverage.

He therefore knows Ndombele well and has many doubts around the midfielder’s move to Napoli, on loan with option to buy for €32.5m.

“I will just say if Spalletti performs a miracle with Ndombele, I’ll take my hat off to him and give him my compliments,” Di Canio told Il Mattino newspaper.

“This lad is really not accustomed to sacrificing himself for the team with work when he’s off the ball. He is not a creative midfielder, at most he can play in a three-man midfield and cut inside behind the striker.

“I don’t expect Spalletti to get Ndombele to walk on water, but if he at least manages to get him swimming, it’d be an extraordinary success.”

Tottenham paid €60m to purchase Ndombele from Olympique Lyonnais in the summer of 2019, but he never really lived up to expectations and was loaned back to Lyon in January 2022.

The midfielder has seven senior caps for France, the most recent in March 2021.

So far, Ndombele has made three appearances for Napoli in Serie A, but only one start in the 1-1 draw with Lecce, which saw him hauled off at half-time.
