Gigi Di Biagio warned Italy Under-21s are “still not close to what I’d like” despite a 3-0 win in Slovenia.

The Azzurrini have a 100 per cent record in qualifying so far, beating Slovenia 1-0 at home and this evening 3-0 with Marco Benassi and a Gaetano Monachello brace.

“It was very similar to the first leg, so we need to raise the tempo and play better. We created a lot, but are still not close enough to what I’d like.

“Nonetheless, it is an important result and another three points in the table,” the Coach told Rai Sport.

Atalanta forward Monachello came off the bench and scored twice in the second half.

“Alberto Cerri was struggling on his own up there, so I introduced a different type of striker and he did a good job.”

Italy’s next qualifier is against the Republic of Ireland on Tuesday October 13, kicking off at 16.00 UK time (15.00 GMT).

“It will be a tough game, as it always is against these sides, as they never give in and make their physicality a main weapon.

“That means we have to be quicker.”
