SPAL failed to score in four consecutive Serie A matches, but Gigi Di Biagio was furious at the 4-0 defeat to Inter. ‘If that’s not a penalty, we can end football.’
The side from Ferrara are rock bottom and even their coach, who replaced Leonardo Semplici in February, admits they are doomed to relegation.
“It’s normal that tonight, for many reasons, we were extra motivated,” Di Biagio told DAZN.

“It’s normal that tonight, for many reasons, we were extra motivated,” Di Biagio told DAZN.
“We had a really good first half and hit the crossbar, then there was the penalty incident… If you go behind against a quality side like Inter, it becomes really difficult and you risk a mauling, which is what happened here, even though the lads did not deserve it.
“Our position is what it is, so now all we can do is try to muster enough pride that we don’t finish last. That has to be the motivation for us to not give up.”
The referee opted against awarding a penalty when Samir Handanovic clattered into Gabriel Strefezza, as the SPAL midfielder’s touch had made the ball unplayable even before contact with the goalkeeper.
“I find it laughable to hear people say that wasn’t a penalty, because if it’s not, we can end football,” noted Di Biagio.
“Knowing VAR is there, that’s a penalty all day long. Seeing some of the spot-kicks that have been awarded lately, it really does make me laugh when it’s suggested that is not a penalty.”
