Italy Under-21 boss Gigi Di Biagio said Stefano Sturaro showed 'a naivety which is not like him’ in being sent off against Sweden.

The Juventus midfielder was dismissed during the European Championships match with the score at 1-1, with the Swedes going on to win the game.

“Stefano has shown a naivety which is not like him,” Di Biagio said after the match.

“He’s a mature and responsible lad, as he’s shown over the last year.”

The former midfielder then reflected on the match, and insisted his side did not deserve to lose.

“The way the game started, no-one would have expected us to lose. We did well to close things up, then what happened, happened.

“We had to try and get the second goal, then after the equaliser the game became complicated beyond belief.

“It was the game we expected, and we were doing well up until it went to 1-1. Against a team like Sweden it’s hard to play your game.

“That said, we didn’t have to lower the tempo the way we did in the final 15 minutes of the first half.

“We had a lot of chances. We’re used to playing better, but in the final third we have to be more convincing.

“[Domenico] Berardi had a good game, especially in the first half. They [Sweden] are good at not surrendering and turning things around.

“For our part, we have to improve our game management when we’re ahead.”
