Luigi Di Biagio hailed Italy’s ‘wonderful’ 3-1 win against Spain and admitted he had ‘no words’ for hero Federico Chiesa.

Italy kicked off their European Under-21 Championship campaign in front of a packed-out Dall’Ara on Sunday and ultimately did their fans justice.

“It’s wonderful, beautiful,” Di Biagio told Rai Sport after the game, looking towards the supporters.

“We knew what awaited us in terms of both the fans and the game. It seems unreal.

“We started badly, we suffered a lot because of their dribbling, but then we came out of our shell.

“We changed our formation and the lads gave a great reaction. In games like these, you have to be perfect.

“It’s a very important win for us and we hope that with this result, we can now move forward with more serenity.

“Now we’ll start thinking about improving for the next game because it’ll be important to do even better.”

The Azzurrini boss then singled out Chiesa for praise after the Fiorentina winger’s brace.

“I have no words. It was he who pulled the team through, not me.”
