There is good news for Udinese star Gerard Deulofeu, who limped off in tears during last week’s game against Napoli. ‘I feared the worst, but it’s nothing serious.’

The 28-year-old was distraught when he suddenly crumpled to the ground at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in a 3-2 defeat on Saturday.

Now the Spaniard has taken to Instagram to reassure supporters the injury is not particularly serious.

“I feared the worst, imagine how scared I was,” wrote Deulofeu.

“Fortunately, that is over. Some of the knee structure is affected by the sprain, but it is nothing serious.”

He is having an excellent season, with two goals and six assists in 15 Serie A games, plus a goal and assist in just two Coppa Italia appearances.

Deulofeu, who was linked with a potential move to Napoli over the summer, also took time to thank the supporters for their reaction to the injury.

“The applause from the Stadio Maradona crowd was something wonderful and a gesture of great respect. I appreciate it very much.”

The news that Deulofeu will be ready for when the Serie A season resumes on January 4 was received with celebratory messages from other players including Milan’s Rafael Leao and his Udinese teammates Beto, Isaac Success and Lazar Samardzic.
