Bologna boss Roberto Donadoni believes Mattia Destro and Simone Verdi have what it takes to become Italy regulars.

The pair played key roles in Bologna’s last two wins, with Destro helping himself to an assist and a goal against Verona and Sampdoria, while Verdi took his tally for the season to four over the weekend.

“Tavecchio? He always behaved fairly and correctly with me,” the Coach told Rai Radio.

“Tavecchio? He always behaved fairly and correctly with me,” the Coach told Rai Radio.

“From a human point of view, I’m sorry about what’s happening to him. it wasn’t easy to say ‘no’ to the national team because it’s a very prestigious role, but I was convinced with my choice of Bologna and I preferred to stick with them. I’d made a commitment to them.

“Destro? He’s one of [Italy’s] most talented players and also taken steps forward in training.

“If he succeeds in maintaining this trend, he’ll become an attractive player for the national team again.

“Who’s already good enough? There are great prospects like Verdi, but there are also those who are still developing and have great potential.

“The problem in Italian football is its general culture and not just the football. When you don’t pick up results, you immediately get sucked into criticism and talk of being sacked.

“When it comes to culture, you have to review it fully. Each of us has to think about what to do in order to improve on the past.

“Everyone must do their bit, the fans and journalists included. National team a burden on the League? This is also something to do with culture.

“When the national team calls up players to boost its own work and there’s a big match on the horizon, there’s instantly criticism. We need to understand what we want.”
