Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti says clubs who prioritise business over sporting merit are ‘destined to fail’ and believes PaoloMaldini’s sacking proves ‘lack of historic culture and lack of respect for Milan’s tradition.’
The Italian tactician spoke to Il Giornale following Maldini’s departure from Milan.
The former defender was suddenly sacked on Monday after a meeting with new owner Gery Cardinale.
The Rossoneri have a new project in mind, based on the so-called ‘Money-ball.’ Milan want to sign promising young players with a massive use of scouting and algorithms while Maldini wanted a bigger transfer budget and a few experienced signings to raise the bar.
“In Madrid, I’ve learned that history must always be respected,” said Ancelotti when asked about Maldini’s sacking.
“Here, Di Stefano, Amancio, Gento and Puskas are exclusive values still respected. What happened to Maldini proves lack of historic culture and lack of respect for Milan’s tradition. It’s true that you don’t win with history, but history teaches how to win.
“Football clubs that think priorities business to sporting merit are destined to fail.”
Maldini played 252 Milan games under Ancelotti, scoring seven goals and winning, among other trophies, the Champions League twice.
Ancelotti has one year left in his contract with Real Madrid and has been heavily linked with the Brazil job. However, the Italian has reiterated that he is not planning to go.
“I am strongly linked to Europe, especially one competition which is the Champions League,” he confirmed.
“I’ve won it as a coach and as a footballer. This is my place and I will stay here in Madrid. I am on good terms with Florentino Perez and life is magical. I will not retire, it’s hard to find something better than Real.”
