France CT Didier Deschamps praised Theo Hernandez’s performance for the national team, as he debuted in a new wing-back role against Finland.
Les Bleus picked up a 2-0 win thanks to two goals by Antoine Griezmann, when Hernandez started his first game for the national team as a wing-back in a 3-4-1-2 formation.
Theo has played at left-back in a back-four since arriving at Milan from Real Madrid in 2019 and was called up for the first time by Deschamps ahead of the World Cup Qualifiers this month.
He was given his debut against Finland yesterday, starring at left in a midfield four, ahead of a three-man defence at the Groupama Stadium.
“Theo has attacking abilities, despite the fact that Milan deploy him in the back four,” Deschamps said at a press conference.
“As always, I try to put my players in the best position and in that role, he can exploit these skills. It was his first game, even though [Lucas] Digne played well.
“He’s fresh and in his first game, he showed a lot of good things.”
Theo has been a key member under coach Stefano Pioli at the Rossoneri, helping the club back to the Champions League group stage, finishing second in Serie A 2020-21.
The 23-year-old has played 83 competitive games since joining Milan, scoring 15 goals and contributing 14 assists in the process.
