France coach Didier Deschamps is delighted that Paul Pogba can return to the pitch in March 2025 but admits there will be ‘discussions’ with Juventus.

Pogba’s four-year doping ban has recently been reduced to 18 months, which means that the France international can return to action in March 2025.

“I’ve spoken on the phone with him for a long time during this challenging period for him. Obviously, it’s very, very, positive news for him,” France coach Deschamps said in an interview with the France Federation.

“At least now, he knows he can return to play football in March. There will be a time, from January to March, when he’ll have to do a lot of specific work. It’s a relief for him, and I am happy for him too.

“It’s still a heavy sanction, but 18 months is less harsh than the initial four years. Some steps must be taken, but it’s excellent news humanly.”

Pogba is under contract with Juventus until June 2026, but he’s not part of the Bianconeri’s plans. Several media outlets have reported that the Serie A giants will hold talks to terminate the midfielder’s deal.

“In the meantime, there will be discussions with his club, Juventus, his current employer,” Deschamps confirmed, “but at least he knows that in March 2025, he can return to playing. He loves football so much.”

Deschamps, a former Juventus midfielder and a 1996 Champions League winner in Turin, also discussed his rapport with Pogba and France footballers.

“I ensure I remain in contact with and support all the players,” he said.

“I’ve known Paul from the very start, but when there are complicated moments, injuries, private issues, or suspensions like this one, the players know that I am available at any time and can communicate with them and with him in this case. It’s essential to me, without knowing what will happen tomorrow. This kind of support is natural in the relationship of trust that I feel I have with the players.”

On Sunday, Pogba was spotted at the Allianz Stadium for Juventus’ 1-1 draw against Cagliari.

He returned to the club on a free transfer from Manchester United in 2022, but has only made 12 competitive appearances since.
