The three decisive minutes that secured Milan’s Scudetto

When Milan took on Inter in the Derby della Madonnina back in February, they sat four points behind their intercity rivals, and their win ultimately proved instrumental in the title race.

The Nerazzurri seemed to have a good chance of defending their Scudetto heading into the match, having performed incredibly solidly in the first half of the season. The Rossoneri, on the other hand, seemed at risk of letting their title hopes slip out of their hands, something that happened last season.

The first 45 minutes of the derby on that cold February afternoon looked good for Simone Inzaghi’s side, with Ivan Perisic putting the ‘home’ side ahead. Everything changed after a crazy three minutes in the final stages of the match as Olivier Giroud netted a brace, giving Milan a 2-1 lead that they’d ultimately convert into a victory.

Despite the defeat, Inter still sat a point ahead of both Napoli and Roma after 24 games, but a 1-1 draw with Napoli the following weekend ultimately saw them slip off the top, a position they wouldn’t hold again for the remainder of the season.
