“Italy-Germany has always been The Game, like a derby,” Del Piero wrote on his official website.
“When you close your eyes as a child and dream of wearing the Azzurri jersey, singing the anthem, scoring a goal at the World Cup and lifting the trophy… the opponents are always Germany.
“I was a child and I celebrated 30 years ago as they played that night at the Bernabeu. Paolo Rossi, Marco Tardelli, Spillo Altobelli, campioni del mondo, campioni del mondo, campioni del mondo.”
Del Piero was referencing the famous television commentary on RAI at the final whistle of that 1982 World Cup Final victory, in which the phrase ‘world champions’ was repeated three times – the number of trophies Italy had won.
