Former captain Alessandro Del Piero ‘was very surprised’ by Juventus’ decision to appoint Andrea Pirlo as their new coach but believes the former midfielder will be ready to ‘convert this opportunity into success’.

Juventus sacked Maurizio Sarri after only one season at the Allianz Stadium and replaced him with World Cup winner Pirlo, who will start his coaching career with the reigning champions.

Del Piero reveals he didn’t expect the job would go to his former Italy teammate.

Del Piero reveals he didn’t expect the job would go to his former Italy teammate.

“I was very surprised because it’s very early for him to be in that position,” Del Piero told Forbes. “I’m surprised because I thought Juve would go in a different direction.

“This is a big challenge for everyone but the club is very strong and the team are very good and Andrea is a great guy.

“I don’t know what he thinks to do on the pitch, but I know him personally so I believe he will be well prepared and ready to take this opportunity and convert it into success."
