Luigi Del Neri hopes Udinese’s narrow win over Genoa can kick start their Serie A season.

The Bianconeri had lost their opening two League matches of the new season, but Jakub Jankto’s strike handed them their first points of the campaign.

“It hasn’t been a great two weeks for us,” a relieved Del Neri admitted.

“It was clear that the previous matches created the ingredients for today’s game, there was a little fear.

“We also have a lot of players out of shape, Larsen was making his debut.

“But with a man advantage we played well. The win gives us strength and energy for the games coming up.”

Udinese’s cause was helped by an early dismissal for Genoa’s Andrea Bertolacci, a decision made after consulation with the new VAR system.

“For me, the VAR is an important step for football.

“The only thing I would say is to do with the time, but we need to improve everything.

“We all accept the VAR, so there are fewer protests. That is very important, looking over key incidents is very important.”
