Vicente Del Bosque concedes “it was a deserved elimination” after Spain crashed out of the World Cup.

The 5-1 defeat to Holland was followed by a 2-0 result against Chile that makes it mathematically impossible for Spain or Australia to progress.

“It was a deserved elimination,” Coach Del Bosque said at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro.

“We showed character, we went forward, but we weren’t fortunate in front of goal.

“The players ran. Of course, when you are behind you have to do more of the running.”

This is an historic occasion, as never before had the reigning World Cup holders lost both their opening games of the next tournament.

Spain won Euro 2008, the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and Euro 2012, but their era seems to be at an end.
