Nicolo Barella will undergo a round of medical tests in the coming hours as Italy work to judge the Inter midfielder’s physical condition ahead of the European Championship.

The 27-year-old midfielder has not trained with the Azzurri since Monday of this week due to a muscle issue, which forced him to miss out on the friendly draw with Turkey. He will not feature in the final pre-tournament friendly against Bosnia and Herzegovina either.

Luciano Spalletti and his Italy staff are concerned about Barella’s fitness but are planning to bring him to Germany for the European Championship regardless. FIGC president Gabriele Gravina admitted that the Inter midfielder’s condition is ‘worrying’ ahead of the tests.

Decisive day for Barella

Page 23 of today’s Corriere dello Sport details how Barella will undergo medical tests at Coverciano in the coming hours to examine his muscle complaint, looking to see if it’s simply a strain to his quadriceps or something more serious.

Spalletti is hoping to deploy the 27-year-old in Italy’s opening game at the European Championship against Albania on June 15th but may have to accept waiting until the second match against Spain on the 20th.
