Silvan Widmer is happy with the message his Serie A debut sends to his fellow youngsters at Udinese.

The Swiss Under-21 international played his first top-flight match at the weekend during the home reverse to Inter.

“I am happy about my Serie A debut,” the 20-year-old told Udinese Channel. “But what matters is the team and we lost 3-0 so we can't be happy with that.”

Widner, who joined the club from Aarau in the summer, had only previously appeared in the Europa League for the Friuli outfit.

“It's good to play,” the defender added. “It makes you feel the confidence from the Coach. Each and every minute is important for a young player so I hope I can play more in the upcoming matches.

“The young players work hard every day to have a chance of featuring in the team. The Coach decides who should play, but I think that every one of us will always do his best.

“There are a lot of us and we work hard every day. I have finally played and it is a good thing for the others too because they see it is possible to get games and be given a chance.”
