André Onana is set to join Inter as a free agent in June, but this doesn’t mean Samir Handanovic will leave the Nerazzurri.

The veteran goalkeeper sees his contract expire at the end of the season, but according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Serie A champions will likely offer him a one-year contract extension.

Handanovic would help Onana settle in his first season at the club, as Gigi Buffon did with Wojciech Szczesny in 2017 when the Poland international joined Juventus from Arsenal.

No coincidence that Inter director Beppe Marotta was in Turin at that time.

According to Calciomercato.com, Handanovic’s contract extension is possible even if his agent Fali Ramadani has offered him to other Serie A clubs, such as Lazio.

If both goalkeepers stay at San Siro, coach Simone Inzaghi will rotate them in league and cup games next season, with Onana becoming the regular starter between the sticks at Inter from 2023-24.
