Milan paid tribute to former goalkeeper and coach Villiam Vecchi who died on Wednesday at the age of 73.

Vecchi spent seven seasons with the Rossoneri from 1967 to 1974, where we a Serie C1, Serie B and Serie A title as well as the Coppa Italia on two occasions, Cup Winners’ Cup on two occasions, European Cup and Intercontinental Cup.

He was nickname the “Hero of Salonika” for his performance in the 1973 Cup Winners’ Cup final win over Leeds United.

He was the club’s goalkeeper coach for their 2003 and 2007 Champions League wins and followed Carlo Ancelotti to Real Madrid in 2013 where he was a European champion again.

At the time of his death, Vecchi was a goalkeeper coach for Qatari club Al Sadd.

A Milan statement read: “Always close to Milan, always Red and Black. The hero of Salonika will continue to make saves up there.

“An incredible sadness among all Milan fans for the passing of Villiam Vecchi. Condolences to the family of our legendary No. 1 and goalkeeping coach of the European champions in 2003 and 2007.”
