Roberto De Zerbi has promised to bring the hammer down on Sassuolo after their 3-2 defeat to Torino. ‘Maybe they’ll learn sitting in the stands.’

It was an astonishing match in today’s rescheduled Serie A Week 24 fixture, as the Neroverdi were 2-0 up until the 76th minute, before completely collapsing.

“Having a young team, sometimes they don’t always understand the situation when it’s happening. We should’ve killed the game, it was our fault we lost,” De Zerbi told Sky Sport Italia.

“Young players tend to make this mistake more than others, despite me telling them repeatedly how important the game is. Maybe they’ll learn sitting on the bench or in the stands.

“My role is to put football and the team first, I can’t just focus on making sure each and every player matures. I have to bring results.

“We are fortunate to be in this line of work and nothing is to be taken for granted. I am very angry.”

Has the talk of potential European qualification clouded the focus of these players?

Sassuolo begin every season aiming to secure Serie A safety and at the same time highlight young players. Sometimes, talented young players take Sassuolo to be a stepping stone and put themselves in front of the team and club, without giving it that something extra.

“This makes me very angry and I’ve been battling against this for the last three years. I want everyone to realise Sassuolo is somewhere we have to give our best and not act like this is just a stepping stone to bigger things.

“I never usually give a team talk in the locker room straight after a game, but I did today. They didn’t need to say a word, just listen.”
