Benevento Coach Roberto De Zerbi admits even he was ‘surprised’ by the signing of Bacary Sagna.

The former Arsenal and Manchester City right-back had been a free-agent since his release from the Etihad Stadium at the end of last season.

However, despite reportedly having offers to join the likes of Schalke, Olympiacos, Braga, Besiktas and Malaga, the Frenchman opted to move to Serie A’s bottom club to aid their seemingly impossible fight against relegation.

However, despite reportedly having offers to join the likes of Schalke, Olympiacos, Braga, Besiktas and Malaga, the Frenchman opted to move to Serie A’s bottom club to aid their seemingly impossible fight against relegation.

“It was a surprise for me too,” De Zerbi admitted at a Press conference. “He is a humble boy with a lot of desire to get things done.

“I also don’t think he will need a long time to get himself fit, considering his physical characteristics.

“Such important signings should give enthusiasm to everyone else, just as it does to me as Coach.”

Benevento have accumulated just seven points in their debut season in Italy’s top flight and tonight face a local derby against League leaders Napoli.

“It will be a match of total suffering, just like the one against Juve,” De Zerbi acknowledged.

“We will have to play a great part of the game without the ball, but that is the same for all opponents of Napoli.

“We are in a situation in which we need to try to get points from everyone, given that there are fewer and fewer matches to play.”
