Sassuolo coach Roberto De Zerbi said he’s not sure if Domenico Berardi can play against Spezia but claimed the late goal against Cagliari was ‘no coincidence’.

The Neroverdi scored in stoppages to claim a point in Sardinia last time and the coach believes his men showed ‘quality’ and ‘character’.

“The late goal is no longer a coincidence,” he said at a press conference. “It shows character, it’s becoming a quality and it shows that the team still believes until the end.

“We always finish the games in attack.”

He said Berardi is still uncertain for the match against Spezia.

“I found Berardi well, I don’t want to risk anything, and we’ll see if he starts,” De Zerbi continued. “[Francesco] Caputo and [Gregoire] Defrel must grow. [Hamed] Traore and [Filip] Djuricic give guarantees, just as [Giacomo] Raspadori did well when he entered.

“The same goes for [Brian] Oddei, who entered at the end and was decisive in the draw.”

De Zerbi expects an ‘organised’ Spezia and said his men must ‘respect’ Vincenzo Italiano’s newly promoted side.

“They’re a very organised team, they are a team who will come to play,” he said. “We must not move to find a team that defends low and is passive compared to a team that wants to play the game.

“They have quality players and it will be a difficult match like any other.

“We respect Spezia, because they’re a team that are making room for themselves with performances and results, but we think about ourselves, like we always do.”
