Roberto De Zerbi was happy with Sassuolo’s performance against Fiorentina and encouraged his stars to follow him and remain at the Neroverdi.

Coach De Zerbi signed a new deal until June 2021 at the Mapei and after an impressive 3-1 win against the Viola, the 41-year-old wants to start climbing the table.

“We played a great game, maybe I’m exaggerating with the changes, but I want fresh legs and it’s fair to give everyone some minutes,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“Everyone is equal here. They are prepared to start games. Unfortunately, we conceded a goal today, but I’m not angry because we played Fiorentina, who are strong going forward.”

Sassuolo sit 13th in Serie A and are currently 12 points above the relegation zone with nine games remaining, preparing to face 18th-placed Lecce next.

“Now we must close the salvation at home against Lecce on Saturday and if we win, we could surpass two or three teams.”

De Zerbi waited to renew his deal until it expired in June and signed until 2021. Now, he encourages his best players to do the same.

“I was happy to stay, nobody called me,” he revealed. “I wanted to stay because in my opinion we haven’t reached our best yet. I really enjoy it.

“[CEO Giovanni] Carnevali has told me he won’t sell [Manuel] Locatelli, [Jeremie] Boga or [Domenico] Berardi. It’s difficult to replace them.

“Beyond the club, the players too must understand that one more year at this level can help them become protagonists.

“If you leave earlier, you could lack the strength. They too must understand what their goals are.”
