Sassuolo boss Roberto De Zerbi and Shakhtar Donetsk’s Paulo Fonseca have emerged as the new favourites to take over at Roma.

According to Corriere dello Sport, Roma chiefs held a conference call with consultant Franco Baldini on Wednesday to discuss new managerial candidates.

The newspaper writes the first name to crop up was De Zerbi, who kept Sassuolo up with what Baldini described as an ‘attractive and arrogant’ style of play.

However, the former Palermo boss would not be prepared to risk putting his promising career on the line for a season that could ‘burn’ him.

Il Corriere adds the foreign track takes the Giallorossi to Fonseca, who recently won his third straight Ukrainian title.

The 46-year-old also memorably dressed up as Zorro after Shakhtar reached the Champions League last 16 during the 2017-18 campaign at the expense of Napoli.

“If Paulo wanted to leave for reasons of ambition, I’d let him go,” the club’s President Rinat Akhmetov is on record as saying.

“It would also give lustre to our club, certifying the growth in his work. There’s a moral understanding between us.

“That also applies for everyone else at Shakhtar. I won’t keep anyone here against their wishes.”
