Roberto De Zerbi was linked with Roma, Milan and Sampdoria, but insists although “there was some contact, I have clear ideas and my stay at Sassuolo was never in doubt.”

The Coach impressed with the Neroverdi and had been mentioned as a strong candidate for the Roma, Milan or Sampdoria jobs.

“It has never been in doubt, so I don’t understand all this clamour. There was some contact, but I have clear ideas on what I want to do. So I have nothing more to add to that,” De Zerbi told Sportitalia.

“It’s pleasing to be associated with big clubs, but it’s not easy to keep up with all these rumours, you’d have to be constantly confirming or denying everything. The truth is that I’ve already planned next season with Sassuolo and that’s all there is to it.

“Sassuolo is a club where you need to be ambitious and eager to make your mark. We have many strong players who I amsure will receive offers, but also a strong ownership that won’t sell if the deal isn’t right.

“We will try to improve our squad for next season.”

There are reports today that defender Merih Demiral has already agreed a €15m transfer to Juventus, after a bidding war with Atletico Madrid.

“I hope Demiral will stay. Some agreements had been reached and I think it’d be good for Demiral too if he stayed at Sassuolo for another year.

“Maybe Stefano Sensi is more ‘ready’ to move on than Demiral. He is an intelligent player, he can understand if he should remain and continue improving himself or if the time has come for a step up.”

Has the right moment come for De Zerbi to move on too?

“I don’t know if one, two or three more years are right. In my career, I’ve always shown that I give my all and need the conditions to work in my own way.”
